Known for his beloved portrayal of Dustin Henderson on the global phenomenon Stranger Things, Gaten Matarazzo has firmly established himself as one of the standout actors of his generation. He began his professional career when he was 9 years old in the original Broadway production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert as Benji, later earning acclaim for his performances in Godspell and as Gavroche in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables, a role he also performed on the 25th Anniversary North American tour.
A lifelong lover of theater, Gaten has continued to showcase his range on stage with celebrated performances in Dear Evan Hansen, Sweeney Todd, and Parade. Recognized by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the “Top 30 Stars Under 30,” he continues to evolve as both an actor and creative force across film, television, and theater.
In 2022, Gaten starred in the live-action-comedy Honor Society for Paramount+. He later voiced Sig Greebling in the Disney+ animated series LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, reprising the role in the 2025 sequel event, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past. In 2025, Gaten returned for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, reprising his SAG Award-winning role as Dustin in one of the most anticipated television finales in recent history, as the series continued its reign as one of the most-streamed shows of all time.
Most recently he starred as Jack in Pizza Movie, the breakout college comedy released by Hulu following its premiere at SXSW. The film became a major success for the platform, earning strong audience response and further establishing Gaten as a leading voice for the next generation. In addition to starring alongside Sean Giambrone, Gaten also served as an executive producer on the project, marking an important step in his continued expansion behind the camera. He can next be seen starring as Toby in Octet, the highly anticipated feature adaptation of Dave Malloy’s acclaimed musical directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. He also voiced Lucky in Animal Farm directed by Andy Serkis, which hit theaters May 1st.
Beyond acting, Gaten is deeply committed to advocacy work surrounding cleidocranial dysplasia, a rare genetic condition affecting bone and dental development. Through his foundation, CCD Smiles, he helps families offset the financial burden of critical dental care while raising awareness for the condition nationwide. He has also appeared on Capitol Hill in support of the bipartisan Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (ELSA), legislation aimed at expanding insurance coverage for individuals born with congenital abnormalities and birth defects.
Looking ahead, Gaten continues to expand his creative ambitions, with aspirations to move into directing and further shape the entertainment landscape both in front of and behind the camera.
Jonathan Larson (Book, Music, Lyrics) was awarded the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his groundbreaking musical RENT. He also won the Tony Award for Best Musical, received The Gilman & Gonzales-Falla Theatre Foundation's Commendation Award twice, and additionally, in 1994 won the Richard Rodgers Award for RENT. RENT has been produced worldwide in numerous languages and was adapted into a feature film in 2005, directed by Chris Columbus. In 2019, Marc Platt produced a live television adaptation of RENT for FOX.
In 1989, Larson was honored with the Stephen Sondheim Award by the American Music Theatre Festival, where he contributed to the musical Sitting on the Edge of the Future. The following year, he received the Richard Rodgers Development Grant for his rock musical Superbia, which was staged at Playwrights Horizons. Larson also composed the score for the 1995 musical J.P. Morgan Saves the Nation, presented by En Garde Arts.
Larson's rock monologue tick, tick…BOOM! was performed at Second Stage Theatre, The Village Gate, and New York Theatre Workshop. The piece went on to be produced off-Broadway in a three-person adaptation by David Auburn, in London, Los Angeles, and other cities globally. tick, tick…BOOM! was later adapted into a feature film for Netflix, produced by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Julie Oh through Imagine Entertainment, and was directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda as his feature film directorial debut.
In 2025, The Jonathan Larson Project was produced off Broadway at The Orpheum Theatre. The show was directed by John Simpkins and created by theatrical historian Jennifer Ashley Tepper and features the unheard works of Larson. The show offers an intimate portrait of a composer who was wildly ahead of his time and is available for licensing via Music Theatre International.
In addition to his work for the stage and screen, Larson composed music for Sesame Street and contributed to various children's book-cassettes, including scores for Steven Spielberg's An American Tail and The Land Before Time. He also worked on film scores for Rolling Stone magazine publisher Jann Wenner and conceived, directed, and wrote original songs for the children's musical video Away We Go!.
RENT, Larson's iconic rock opera based on La Bohème, premiered on February 13, 1996, at New York Theatre Workshop and subsequently ran on Broadway for 12 years. Tragically, Jonathan Larson passed away unexpectedly from an aortic aneurysm on January 25, 1996, just ten days before his 36th birthday.
Despite his untimely death, Larson's legacy endures through his influential works, and the work of the Jonathan Larson Foundation (administered by the American Theatre Wing). The Foundation supports the work of emerging musical theatre artists and has helped foster the careers of many of today's established Broadway creators.
